On Fridays, The Wall Street
Journal has a Taste page, and on May 21, the Houses Of Worship
column was written by Sarah Pulliam Bailey. Ms. Bailey wondered
quite profitably about what message might be taken from the ABC show
Lost? The series' end was imminent, and the end result of Ms.
Bailey's musing on message was "an acceptance of unresolved
tension."
As obvious a parallel to Keats' negative capabilities as this is, it
also points to an idea associated with Otto Rank, the acceptance of
uncertainty. The Mighty Quinn's theme of pessimism of the intellect
and optimism of the will is also indicated.
The May 22 issue of The New York Post reported that the final
episode would "air simultaneously in Europe - regardless of
international time differences." In Canada, it would "air
simultaneously with the US' Eastern time zones." Further, 59
countries would broadcast the finale "no later than 48 hours after
the US ...[with] subtitles for viewers in non-English-speaking
territories."
The power of American popular culture in the dissemination of
difficult ideas - a vital facet of The Mighty Quinn - is unmatched.
